Other customers have used the system as a stand-alone solution in refrigeration systems where Altierre sensor tags, readers and software are installed to capture relevant data. Previously, food retailers sent staff to record refrigeration and heating systems, and they manually recorded the temperature on a notebook for a specified period of time, four to five times a day. However, if there is a problem outside of the inspection, such as the door is opened or the equipment fails, the staff cannot find it in time. Saxena noted that Altierre's new RFID temperature monitoring system reduces the time required for manual reading temperatures and provides a very high return on investment (ROI). According to Saxena, Altierre's RFID temperature monitoring system is superior to other current temperature tracking solutions. Although wireless temperature tracking using Wi-Fi or ZigBee RFID tags is common in hospitals, he said that Wi-Fi has a limited number of sensors, and a store may need hundreds or thousands of sensors. A week before Altierre released the new product, the US House Energy and Commerce Committee issued an amendment to the 2009 Food Safety Enhancement Act, which was voted by the House of Representatives.
