Sweden's Volvo is scheduled to launch a large-scale automated driving vehicle demonstration experiment in 2017. It is planned to prepare 100 test vehicles based on the Volvo SUV (XC90) and drive on the road in Sweden.

Volvo has put forward the goal of reducing the death and serious injuries of the company's new models to zero by 2020. The company called this target "VISION 2020" and made efforts to this end. In order to achieve VISION 2020, the autonomous vehicle has an important responsibility, and Volvo has begun to advance the experimental project "Drive Me".

“Improve safety. Needless to say, autonomous vehicles can also help improve environmental and traffic congestion. It also allows people to get out of driving and create free time.” Henrik Lind (Volvo, Volvo's Drive Me project) Senior technical expert) describes this. Lind gave a presentation at the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2016 at NVIDIA's GPU Technology Developers Conference, introducing Volvo's move to Drive Me.

In his speech, Lind revealed the contents of the road test to be implemented in 2017 and the matters to be verified, and introduced the technical elements required for the automatic driving system.

The road experiment, implemented as part of the Drive Me project, placed the stage in Gothenburg, where Volvo is headquartered (Figure 2). Let the vehicle drive on a pre-determined runway with automatic driving. The runway is located on a car-only road that has no opposite lanes, intersections, lights, and intersections, and prohibits pedestrians and bicycles from passing.

The maximum speed of the vehicle is limited to 70km/h. The automatic driving level changes according to traffic conditions, and "Lin" does not automatically travel when the weather is bad (rainy days). Since this is Volvo's first large-scale road experiment, I feel that the experimental conditions are quite prudent.

Volvo prepared a self-driving car based on the VX90 for the experiment. The vehicle-mounted computer responsible for vehicle control uses NVIDIA's "DRIVE PX2". The sensors are supplied by Autoliv, Sweden. In addition, the Swedish Transport Agency, the City of Gothenburg, the Chalmers University of Technology, the Lindholm Academy of Sciences, etc. will also assist in road experiments.

In this speech, Volvo's Lind also talked about the technical elements required for autonomous vehicles. Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring the reliability of the autonomous driving system. “Brake, steering and signal transmission paths must all be redundant. Part of the sensor and control unit is also required to be redundant” (Lind).

It is said that Volvo will also advance its work in accordance with the automotive functional safety standard ISO26262 (ASIL). The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) that controls the automatic driving system "to achieve the highest level of ASIL-D in ISO26262" (Lind). The sensors surrounding the monitored vehicle "do not have to be as strict as ASIL-D" (Lind).
