Philips Lighting, the global lighting leader, announced on the 23rd that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Mobile Research Institute to jointly explore the cellular Internet of Things standards for smart connected lighting to help build smart cities. China Mobile Research Institute is the core R&D and technical support center for the world's largest mobile network providers. At the same time, Philips Lighting set up a smart interconnected road lighting application based on cellular IoT technology at the China Mobile 5G Joint Innovation Center in Beijing.

Ms. Qiu Yihong, Chief Innovation Officer of Philips Lighting Innovation Day 2017, announced cooperation with China Mobile

The cellular Internet of Things is considered to be one of the high-quality wide-area Internet technologies that can be applied to the construction of smart city infrastructure, especially for applications such as road lighting. Compared to current GSM and LTE networks, the emerging cellular IoT standard can reduce energy consumption while supporting more connection points. Currently, cellular IoT reliability and adaptability testing for road lighting is underway, taking into account both the densely populated central city and the evacuated suburban areas.

Philips Lighting and China Mobile will invest in intelligent internet lighting based on cellular Internet of Things technology in the exploration of smart city construction

“The characteristics of road lighting make it the potential to be the core of a smart city,” said Qiu Yihong, chief innovation officer of Philips Lighting. “In the construction of large-scale smart city infrastructure such as outdoor smart connected lighting, the emerging cellular Internet of Things standards have a strong appeal. Philips Lighting will work with companies in all sectors, including China Mobile, to lead the way in technology development and lay a solid foundation for the future of smart connected lighting systems."

As a new standard for Machine-to-Machine (M2M), cellular IoT technology relies on cellular mobile networks to reduce network operating costs while reducing the energy consumption of networked nodes. Currently, cellular IoT technology is supported by chip manufacturers, module manufacturers and mobile operators. Mobile operators can support cellular IoT systems by simply upgrading their existing network infrastructure to take advantage of the number of connections and operating costs.
