With Disney's latest VR technology, users will be able to distinguish between slight drizzle and heavy rain.

Disney Research has recently developed a 360-degree virtual reality application that provides users with whole-body tactile feedback through a unique chair, allowing them to add custom “feeling effects,” such as rain or a beating heart. .

Ali Israr, a senior research engineer at the Disney Pittsburgh Institute, said: "With the advancement of computer graphics and computing platforms, and the seamless flow of information between hardware and software, it can be brought together in a powerful way, with virtual reality in recent years. There has been a revival."

"Our team is working hard to make VR tactile as rich as today's 360-degree visual media. Current VR systems can only provide 'click' haptic feedback through the hand controller. But there are more sensory technologies."

He pointed out: "We have created a framework that allows users to pick and adjust themselves from a wide range of meaningful feelings to complement visual scenes and implement them through a variety of tactile feedback devices."

The haptic startup and editing plug-in developed by researchers connects the VR game engine to specially crafted haptic devices. Users can create, customize, and associate haptic feedback with events that are triggered in the VR game engine.

This haptic application, called VR360HD, was developed and tested by the consumer's head and the Disney Academy's haptic chair.

There are six vibration actuators on the back of the chair and two woofers or "vibrators" in the seat and back.

The linkage of the back actuator produces a feeling of local movement, while the woofer provides tremors to two different areas of the body, creating a feeling of movement.

Users can select different sensory effects from the tactile library, which are developed and tested by the Disney Institute.

These sensory effects are identified by common terms such as rain, pulse, or rumbling. The feeling can also be adjusted accordingly to facilitate the user's differentiation, such as light rain and heavy rain.
