Lighting is a discipline about light and vision. The strength of light and the color of light are not just physical phenomena, but also a combination of physiology and psychology. In this issue, we talk about philosophical speculation about technology and ethics.

As we all know, the development of technology often has some conflicts with social morality, such as cloning technology. In fact, color rendering also has this problem. We know that color development is divided into faithful color development and effect color development. Which one is more important?

We have interviewed Mr. Wei Minchen, a member of the Department of Light Source and Lighting Engineering of Fudan University, Ph.D., Department of Architectural Engineering, Pennsylvania State University, CIE TC1-90, TC1-91, and IES Color Quality Working Group, on WeChat.

The color of the lighting field is not a simple colorimetry

Q: What is the real world of our human beings in terms of the color of light?

A: Color is a very important aspect of lighting quality. The color of the lighting field is not a simple colorimetry, but also a combination of physiology and psychology. The reason we can see the color is because the three cones on our retina are stimulated by light, and then such stimulation is transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve. However, how these three kinds of cells handle the stimulus, how our brain processes this information, and whether our treatment of this information is culturally and geographically unknown is still unknown.

Domestic and international lighting visual research

Q: Can you tell us about the general situation of lighting visual research at home and abroad?

A: The two technical committees of the International Lighting Association CIE (TC1-90 and TC1-91) and a working group of the North American Lighting Society IES have brought together many researchers and lighting manufacturers to study how to accurately evaluate people's color vision and The ability of the light source to develop color for an object.

Compared to our huge domestic lighting market, there are very few researchers involved in these international studies. Professor Lin Yandan from Fudan University in China and the visual and color science laboratory led by her have done a lot of work in this area. Professor Lin himself also serves as the chairman of CIE's TC1-91 technical committee. We hope that domestic lighting manufacturers can pay more attention to the quality of lighting including color while paying attention to light efficiency, and can carry out related research together with our researchers.

Which is more important for faithful color development and effect color development?

Q: The color development is divided into faithful color development and effect color development. Which one is more important in your opinion?

A: In my opinion, faithful color development and effect color development are very important.

Our so-called faithful color development (that is, we usually use CRI) compares the color of the light source under test with the color presented by a standard light source. The closer the two are, the better the faithful color. The standard light source I used in the last issue has been introduced, that is, blackbody radiation or daylight model. These standard light sources are just the light sources that we think are familiar to everyone. It does not mean that we will really compare the colors under the tested light sources with those under standard light sources. The colors are compared.

With the increasing popularity of LEDs, faithful color development is especially important in many commercial lighting retrofit projects. During the retrofit process, the color of the LED illumination is compared to the color originally under the tungsten halogen lamp, and it is desirable that the color be as uniform as possible under the illumination of the two sources. Since the spectrum of the tungsten halogen lamp is similar to that of the black body radiation, when the faithful color rendering ability of the LED is good, the color of the object under the illumination of the LED is closer to the color of the original tungsten halogen lamp.

The so-called effect color is actually that the object is more beautiful under the illumination of the light source. Many studies have shown that people have memory colors for some commonly used things, and the memory colors of these objects are not exactly the same as those under standard light sources. People prefer a color that is more saturated than a standard light source. The preferences for these colors are related to the race and to the application scenario. For example, white people prefer their skin color to be more rosy than under standard light sources; people have different preferences for the same object in the restaurant and in the market.

Is the fluorescent whitening technology replaced by LED light source technology?

Q: The previous fluorescent whitening technology may not be useful in the current era of LED light source technology. Is this also a good thing?

A: In my opinion, the fluorescent whitening technology will not disappear due to the presence of LEDs. When people are in a lighting environment, we don't want all white objects to have only one whiteness. In other words, we still need fluorescent whitening agents. How to adjust the LED spectrum to make the fluorescent whitening agent play its due role is the problem we need to consider.
