Intel Powers SoC Technology - Closing the Shortcomings of the Mobile Market On the afternoon of December 11th, Beijing time, Intel is paying more and more attention to SoC (System on Chip) technology, which is widely used in smart phones and tablet computers. These two areas are just Intel's shortcomings.

Intel introduced the next-generation 22nm "SoC" system-on-chip technology at the International Electronic Components Conference on Monday. SoC technology can integrate most of the core functionality of a device on a single piece of silicon, typically for mobile devices. On mobile devices, the importance of space and power consumption will be placed on one.

Intel executive Mark Bohr said at the meeting: “In the past, we mainly focused on developing high-performance transistors. Now we are developing more widely used transistor technologies and eventually applying them to tablet computers and On micro devices."

The number of tablets and smartphones adopting SoC is increasing year by year, which poses a serious challenge for Intel, because most of the small devices use rival ARM's SoC. Today, Intel is using its 22nm "TriGate" 3D chip technology for SoC for the first time. Intel said that this next-generation 3D chip has achieved a 20 to 65% improvement in performance over the company's current 32-nanometer SoC.

The 22nm TriGate technology has been used today in mainstream Ivy Bridge processors but has not yet been integrated into Intel SoC, which always lags behind the development of Intel PC processors. Ivy Bridge processors are widely used in Windows and Apple laptop products.

Intel SoC is still using the old 32-nanometer process, which includes the Clover Trail chip that Windows 8 tablets are using, and the Medfield chip that Motorola Mobile and Lenovo uses for smart phones and other devices.

Since Intel’s release on Monday was limited to production technology and did not involve specific chips, Intel did not disclose which SoC will use the 22-nm TriGate technology in the future.

But Nathan Brookwood, chief analyst at market research firm Insight 64, said that a design codenamed "Silvermont" would be a candidate. It is rumored that Silvermont is designed based on Atom's chip architecture. Intel revealed that 22nm SoC technology will be ready for volume production in 2013.
